Can we talk about cellulite in midlife for a minute? Because somewhere along the way, I started noticing things about my body that I swear weren’t there before. 😂
A little less firmness here. A little more texture there. Skin that doesn’t seem to bounce back quite the way it used to. Maybe you’ve noticed it too.
That’s the funny thing about midlife. Some of these changes seem to sneak up on us. One day we’re going about our lives, and the next we’re looking in the mirror wondering, Wait…when did that happen?
But here’s what I think we need to talk about more: some of these changes are simply part of getting older. Our hormones, our skin and our bodies are changing. And sometimes it feels like we notice the results all at once.
Honestly, I don’t think most of us were prepared for it.
So this isn’t going to be a “fix yourself” or “get your old body back” conversation. But I do think there’s value in understanding what’s happening and knowing what we can realistically do to support our skin and bodies as we age.
What Is Cellulite, Really?
First things first: cellulite in midlife is completely normal.
It’s the dimpled or uneven texture we most often notice on our thighs, hips, buttocks and sometimes our abdomen. It happens because of the way fat beneath the skin interacts with the connective tissue underneath.
And cellulite isn’t simply about how much you weigh. Genetics, hormones, skin thickness and the structure of our connective tissue all play a role. Women of all shapes, sizes and fitness levels have it.
You can lose weight and still have cellulite in midlife. You can be incredibly fit and have cellulite. And as we move through midlife, changes in our skin and muscle can simply make cellulite that was already there more noticeable.
Why Cellulite Can Become More Noticeable in Midlife
Here’s the part I wish someone had explained to me years ago.
Collagen has actually been gradually declining for years. Then, as estrogen levels drop during the menopause transition, our skin may become thinner, drier and less elastic.
At the same time, we’re naturally losing muscle as we age, especially if we aren’t intentionally doing things to maintain it.
Put those things together and the skin on our arms, thighs, stomach or backside may look and feel different than it used to. Less firm. A little looser. More textured.
Some of that simply comes with getting older. But there are things we can do to support our skin and bodies as they change.
So… What Actually Helps Cellulite In Midlife?
There is no magic cream, overnight transformation or single treatment that permanently changes everything.
But there are things we can do. And some of the things that support the way our skin looks also help us become stronger and healthier as we age, which feels like a pretty good deal to me. 😂
1. Build and Maintain Muscle
If we’re talking about what deserves our attention in midlife, maintaining muscle belongs near the top of the list.
Muscle matters for strength, balance, mobility, bone health, metabolism and, yes, the overall firmness and shape of our bodies.
Walking is wonderful, but it isn’t quite enough on its own. We need to challenge our muscles too.
That can mean weights, resistance bands, machines or our own body weight. The goal is simply to give our muscles a reason to stick around.
2. Prioritize Protein (and Don’t Forget the Water)
Protein has become one of my own biggest wellness priorities in this season of life. It gives our bodies the building blocks needed to build and maintain muscle, especially when we’re pairing it with strength training.
I’ve been working on including a good source of protein at each meal rather than getting to the end of the day and realizing I barely ate any. And then there’s water. It won’t make cellulite in midlife disappear, but staying hydrated supports our overall health and normal skin function.
Nothing fancy really… just giving our bodies more of what they need.
3. Keep Moving Your Body
Walk. Dance. Take the stairs. Garden. Try that Zumba class you’ve been thinking about. 💃🏻
Movement is good for us for about a hundred different reasons, including supporting healthy circulation.
You’ll also hear plenty about massage, dry brushing and vibration plates for cellulite and “lymphatic support.” These things can feel wonderful and have a place in our wellness routines, but I don’t think we need to turn every healthy habit into a cellulite treatment for it to be worth doing.
Sometimes taking care of our bodies is reason enough.
4. Take Care of the Skin You’re In
We spend a lot of time thinking about skincare from the neck up, but the skin on the rest of our body is aging right along with our face.
Consistent moisturizing can help skin look and feel smoother and healthier. I also look for skincare with ingredients that support the appearance of healthy, aging skin. One of my favorites is Bidens pilosa, a botanical ingredient used in Neora’s skincare as a plant-based alternative to retinol. In one study, a standardized extract of Bidens pilosa showed effects on skin structure and collagen that were comparable to, and in some cases better than, retinol and retinoic acid.
As with most things when it comes to skincare, consistency matters. We’re not talking about slathering something on Friday night and waking up with brand-new thighs on Saturday morning. 😂
Good skincare isn’t about expecting a lotion to completely transform our bodies. That said, I’ve seen a pretty remarkable difference in my own skin since I started using FIRM Body Contour Cream. It’s one of the reasons I’ve become such a believer in taking care of the skin below our neck too.
5. And Then There Are the Extras
I’m actually a fan of the extras. 😂 I love good skincare, and I’ve become pretty fascinated by some of the technology available to support our skin and bodies as we age.
At The Renewal Room, for example, we use CryoToning when the goal is to support the appearance of firmer, smoother-looking skin, while CryoSlimming is designed more specifically for body contouring and reducing localized areas of fat.
Those are two different goals. Reducing fat isn’t the same thing as treating cellulite in midlife, and I think it’s important to be realistic about what any treatment can and can’t do.
And then there’s FIRM, the body product I use and recommend at home to support smoother, firmer-looking skin. It’s also 29% off right now, which makes this a pretty great time to try it. Shop FIRM here.
The way I look at the extras… they’re tools, not magic.
They can complement the other ways we’re caring for ourselves, but we don’t need to fix every dimple, line or bit of loose skin we find.
What I Want Women to Know
I’m not interested in trying to get my 30-year-old body back. Honestly, I don’t even want her back. 😂
I want to take care of the body I have now. I want to build muscle so I’m strong for the years ahead. I want to eat in a way that supports me. I want to move my body, take care of my skin and, yes, enjoy some of the extras along the way.
Not because I’m trying to turn back the clock. Because aging is a privilege, and I want to feel really good while I’m doing it.
There isn’t one cream, treatment, workout or magic solution for cellulite in midlife. It’s really all the little things we choose to do for ourselves, consistently, that add up over time.
I’m still figuring some of this out too, but I think I’m learning to approach it all with a little more grace and a lot less pressure.
Maybe instead of trying to get our old bodies back, we simply get better at taking care of the ones we have now.
